27 Dec Water Damage in Your Vacation Home
Tips to Protect Your Vacation Property from Water Damage
The amount of damage that water can wreak on a home is nothing short of catastrophic. Small leaks that aren’t addressed immediately can lead to expensive, enormous repair bills.
In our last post, we talked about a woman who came home from work to find that a pipe in her bathroom had burst earlier in the day. By the time she walked through the front door, the damage had been done. The inch of standing water that had taken over her entire home- led to thousands of dollars in repairs.
Not only, did she need to move out for two weeks so the contractors could handle the repairs- she learned she’d need new flooring, that the bottom two feet of drywall needed to be ripped out, and several pieces of furniture would need to be replaced.
Imagine what would have happened had she been out of town.
How to protect your home
Everyone who owns a vacation property in SWFL can benefit from hiring a home watch service. Why? Because we’ll be your eyes and ears on the ground when you’re not in town to look after your asset yourself.
For example, if you want to have a contractor inspect your roof in advance of the rainy season, home watch professional can be at your home to receive them. If the contractor determines that repairs need to be made, you’ll be notified immediately.
Again, when it comes to water damage, it’s best to address small problems before they have a chance to turn into big ones.
Another way to protect your home from water damage is to turn the water off when you’re heading out of town. This involves turning the water flow knobs for your toilets to the “off” position and making sure that your washing machine (and dishwasher) hoses are turned off as well.
Be sure to check your weather stripping before you leave, because if it doesn’t seal tightly, water (and/or bugs) could enter your home.
Although it’s not possible to avert all in-home disasters, finding ways to address a problem as quickly as possible can help prevent small issues from snowballing into larger ones.
This is where a home watch service comes in.
