04 Nov Top 3 Ways to Keep Your Home Safe While Traveling This Holiday Season
If you’re planning to travel during the year-end holiday season, you’ll want to ensure your home (and your belongings) remain secure. Traveling can be enormously relaxing (and let’s face it, with the way 2020 has been going, we could all use some R&R), but arriving home to find your home has been burglarized, is among the most stressful things a person can go through.
As such, for this post, we wanted to discuss the top 3 things you can do to keep your home safe when you’re traveling.
Make sure your home looks “lived in”
There are lots of things that alert burglars that a homeowner might be out of town. For example, overstuffed mailboxes, porches that are cluttered with piles of junk mail and newspapers on the front lawn, all scream “no one is home.”
In addition to asking a friend or neighbor to help clear the clutter from the front of your property, consider parking your car in the driveway. Lastly, you may also want to install some timers for your TV and/or interior lights. Again, when a home looks occupied, it’s much less likely to be targeted by thieves.
Before you leave for your trip, make sure all of your windows and doors are locked and secured—including exterior doors that lead into your garage. One homeowner we spoke with recalled the time her garage was broken into when she and her husband were away visiting family. “We remembered to lock up the house, but we forgot to lock the door that leads from the backyard into the garage,” she said. “Whoever broke in had a field day. They took my husband’s tools, our jet-ski and three bikes. Now, every time we travel, I make sure to check the doors and windows twice.”
Consider a Home Watch Service
When you hire a home watch service, you’ll be partnering with a seasoned professional who will look after (and care for) your home as if it’s their own. In addition to helping clear clutter from your front porch, making sure your porch plants are watered, and that your home’s entryways are secure, they’ll alert you if there’s a problem with your pool, your plumbing, your electrical system or your roof.
