27 Feb Tips to Protect Your Home Before You Leave Your SWFL Home for the Season
If you’re a relatively new Southwest Florida vacation homeowner, you may be wondering how to keep your investment safe when you’re not around to look after the property yourself.
For this post, we wanted to talk about some of the most important things you’ll want to add to your departure checklist.
Before you take off for the airport (or pack up the car for a long drive home), you’ll want to be sure to lock all doors, windows and entryways. You’ll also want to make sure to lock any doors that lead into your garage. It may sound like an obvious precaution, but if your departure has you spinning around and feeling rushed, securing entry points can often be forgotten. Remembering to make sure doors and windows are locked is probably the most important step you can take to protect your home from burglars.
Give an extra key to a friend or neighbor
It’s always a good idea to make sure a trusted friend or neighbor has a key to your home, just in case something goes wrong. If a repairman needs to be let in, or police need to gain entry to your house, you won’t need to worry about needing to be there yourself.
If you don’t have motion detector lights, consider installing them
Burglars tend to prefer to target homes that aren’t well lit. Flood lights and/or motion detecting lights can be a great way to scare off potential wrongdoers. Most experts agree the best place to install these lights are over the front door, first-floor windows (front, side and back-facing) and above the garage door.
Take your valuables with you
When you leave SWFL for the season, don’t leave valuable jewelry or electronics behind. Be sure to remove expensive rings, earrings, watches and i-Devices from the household. If you have other types of expensive electronics (such as a 4K television), it’s best to make sure those items can’t be seen should someone peer into a window.
Hire a home watch company
The main job of a home watch company is to keep a home safe and secure in the homeowner’s absence. There are a number of benefits to hiring this type of service provider, and we’d encourage you to read some of our prior blog posts if you’d like to learn more.
