07 Jan Tips to Prevent a Vacant Home from Burglars
If you own a vacation property in SWFL you’ll want to make sure you can do everything you can to protect that home from burglars when you’re gone.
Statistics show that thieves are far more likely to target a home that appears to be vacant- and there are several signs that indicate that a residence isn’t being occupied.
Don’t let junk mail stack up on your porch or in your mailbox
Nothing screams “vacant home” like piles of uncollected mail. If you’re not planning on being in SWFL for several weeks or months, you may want to consider asking a friend or neighbor to collect (and dispose of) whatever happens to be collecting in your absence.
Make sure your shrubbery is maintained
It may sound a bit nuts, but would-be wrongdoers pay close attention to the state of a property’s shrubs, bushes and plants. Dead porch plant and/or overgrown shrubs are a telltale sign that a home isn’t being lived in. If you’re not going to be in SWFL for an extended period of time, you’ll want to make sure that a gardener or landscaper is maintaining your plants, lawn and trees to ensure that everything continues to look cared for and green.
Invest in motion lighting
If you don’ have motion lighting, you may want to consider having it installed. Burglars often prefer to break into homes in the dark of night—because they’re far less likely to be seen. If you have windows or doors that aren’t immediately visible from the street, this could be an attractive entryway for someone who is looking to steal your belongings. Motion lights are a fantastic deterrent. At the same time, you’ll want to make sure that someone is keeping an eye on your home, to make sure that lightbulbs are changed promptly should one happen to burn out.
