14 Jan Tips for Protecting Your Vacation Property from Water Damage
Any homeowner who has endure a flood can tell you how expensive (and catastrophic) water damage can be. If something springs a leak in a home that you’re living in, the leak may be inconvenient, but it’s something that can be addressed promptly.
On the other hand, if a pipe bursts or a water heater fails, and the homeowner isn’t around to fix it, the problem may go unchecked for weeks, if not months. Should this happen what could have been a simple repair job could turn into an enormous headache. Floors and carpeting may need to be replaced, furniture may be significantly damaged and depending on the nature of the problem, several feet of drywall may need to be removed.
As such, if you own a vacation home in Southwest Florida, you’ll want to make sure that it’s being cared for in your absence. Below are a few ways you can protect your home from water damage when you’re not in town.
Call a roofer to perform a free inspection
If you’re going to be out of town during the rainy season, be sure to have a contractor inspect your roofing system before you leave town. If they see evidence of leaks or they notice that your roof is in need of repair, you’ll be able to address the problems right away. Reputable roofing companies will perform this type of inspection for free.
Turn the water off
One of the easiest ways to prevent water damage is to make sure the water is turned off. If you’re unable (or unwilling) to do this, make sure that dishwasher and washing machine hoses are shut off.
Check your weather stripping
You’ll want to make sure that you inspect you weather stripping, doors and windows to make sure they seal tightly. If not, you run the risk of having water (and insects) enter your home.
Consider hiring a home watch company
