Tips for Keeping Your Vacation Home Pest-Free

Tips for Keeping Your Vacation Home Pest-Free

Owning a vacation home is something that most people dream about. If you own a house or condo in Southwest Florida, you understand how great it is to have a place to wind down, relax and escape from the hustle and bustle of day-to-day life.

The last thing you’d want is to return to Florida, only to find that you have a bunch of unwanted tenants have moved in. Especially if these tenants are fuzzy, crawly and have four or more legs.

If you don’t live in the area full time, it’s important to make sure your vacation home will be protected from pests when you’re not around. Below are a few of the things you can do to make sure your treasured oasis doesn’t turn into a horror show.

Make sure your home is a fortress

No one wants to arrive to their vacation home to find mouse droppings throughout the kitchen and pantry. Remember- like the old adage says, an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure. Make sure that your windows and doors are secure and that you don’t see anything that could resemble an access point. Mice have been known to enter homes through openings that are no bigger than the size of a dime—so you’ll want to make sure your house or condo is locked down tightly.

Just say “no” to free food

If you’re planning on leaving for an extended period of time, don’t leave free food for uninvited guests. Seal all food that’s stored in cardboard boxes (Graham crackers, cookies, pasta, etc.) in plastic containers. If you keep dog dry dog food in the house, be sure this is stored in a plastic container, too. Although mice and squirrels will chew through boxes, they’re less likely to try to chew through heavy-duty plastic containers.

If you have fruit trees on your property, make sure that someone comes by regularly to collect what’s fallen to the ground.

Consider a Home Watch service

When the weather outside is frightful, mice, squirrels and other types of rodents prefer to be indoors. If you’re not going to be in SWFL for an extended period of time and you want to make sure you don’t return to a home has been taken over by unwanted tenants, you may want to consider hiring a home watch service.
