Things to Do Before You Leave Your SWFL Home for the Season

Summer isn’t here yet, but it will be here before you know it. Once the weather starts to turn, it’s not unusual for the Florida snowbirds to return to their full-time residence. If you’re about to fly off to another part of the country because you want to avoid the hot, humid SWFL summer, you’re not alone.

At the same time, you’ll want to make sure your vacation / winter home stays protected while you’re gone. Below are just a few of the things you’ll want to do before you leave town.

Take photos of everything

One of the most important things you can do is to spend some time photographing the interior and exterior of your home. We’re not suggesting you’re going to pull the photos out and look at them longingly during the moths you’re not here, but we are suggesting that they’re a must-have for your insurance company, should you need to file a claim.

The best place to store a photo inventory is in a place where it’s not vulnerable to damage. If you’re able to upload everything to the cloud, this is ideal. If you’re not entirely sure what the cloud is or how to use it, ask your kids or grandkids if they can help.

Plan for plant / lawn care

One of the easiest ways to spot a vacant home is by looking at the lawn, shrubbery and porch plants. When a yard is unkept, grass is overgrown and/or porch plants are left to die, this is a telltale sign that a house is unoccupied. Would-be thieves prefer to target unoccupied homes, for all of the obvious reasons, so you’ll want to make sure that you hire someone to help you get your grass mowed and make sure your plants are cared for when you’re not around to do the job yourself.

Contact a home watch service

A home watch service is an important resource that will help ensure your home is looked after, in your absence.  At Gulf Shore Home Watch & Concierge we’ll make sure that newspapers and junk mail are cleared from your porch, your appliances are working properly and that your doors and windows are secure. We can even arrange to do some light grocery shopping for you, before you return, so you’ll have some things on hand to make breakfast the day after you arrive.
