22 Jul Dangers of Post-Hurricane Water Damage
When you own a home in SWFL, there are few things that are scarier than learning that a hurricane is on the way. This is especially true if you’re only in Florida part-time.
Hurricanes are known for causing lots and lots of damage. From ripping shingles off rooftops, to toppling palm trees and blowing away lawn furniture, there are any number of things that can go wrong. However, if you’re among the Southwest Floridians who has planned ahead (ie: you stored your outdoor furniture the last time you were here), and you put up storm shutters (or you purchased impact windows) as a precautionary measure, that’s not to say you’re in the clear.
When a hurricane strikes, you still run the risk of dealing with water damage.
Water damage can be significant
Several weeks ago, we talked to a homeowner whose kitchen and bathroom sinks flooded while she was out of town. She lives on the bottom floor of an older condominium building, and at some point, while she was gone, her upstairs neighbor decided to put pasta and eggshells in the garbage disposal.
That mistake clogged the building’s pipes, and that clog caused dirty water to rise in (and spill over) her kitchen and bathroom sinks. The stagnant water sat there until she returned from her trip.
At first glance it seemed like a mess, but not like a disaster. It wasn’t until the insurance adjuster came out that she learned that the bathroom and kitchen cabinets needed to be replaced. Not only that, but the kitchen floor, bathroom floor, and all of the flooring in the master bedroom and the living room needed to be torn out as well. On top of that, the bottom 2-feet of drywall in all the affected rooms also needed to be ripped out and redone. In total, the flood caused about $20,000 in damage.
